Love Yourself - Part 3
For all ladies out there… If you think of getting the tight fitting push up bra think again! Tight bras will press on the breasts’ blood vessels that carry oxygen to the breast. It will deterred the blood flow and subsequently cut down the amount of oxygen to the breasts. Cancer doesn’t happen overnight and there’s always a contributing external factors at work and the bra could be one of them. Generally, ladies tend to favor tight bras versus comfort and the misconception that tighter bras gives better support or because they are shy about their sizes. So ladies, wear the correct bra size or go braless more often as a measure for cancer prevention.

Something sweet
I have received a basket full of CNY goodies from one of my sister as a gift. Of course the kids were thrilled but like Christmas I told them not to open those goodies till the celebration of CNY itself. Some kind of self-control and discipline I taught them since they were young. They obliged and nodded.
I am also thinking to make a goodie hamper for my eldest son’s school. To share and give. I guess this is the celebration is all about whether you are a Chinese, Indian, Malay, Christian, and from other races.
Its a kind of reminiscent of my childhood that my family used to get from neighbors of other races. Every time without fail, our family used to get traditional homemade sweet coconut candy cake, cookies, and so many others from the Indians and Malays. In return my mom will give a cup or two of sugar. I used to ask mom instead of sugar can we give them other items? It sounded weird, ain’t it but that’s their tradition. Since we shifted, we no longer get those goodies from the old neighborhood but we were still invited to their open house.
For me, those days were gone. I do not see any one here (where I lived) practiced those supposedly said tradition, at least that happened to our old neighborhood. It doesn’t matter if the cookies were slightly sweeter than is supposed to be or even if it doesn’t fit your taste bud, but it’s the thought that count. I also remember clearly lingering around the cookies and finishing off the last bit with my sisters when I was a kid. Nothing is sweeter than this plateful..that is going to last forever in my heart.
Love Yourself - Part 2
If you must skip breakfast (of which is not recommended) think again! Considering the eight or nine hours since the last meal, your body to refuel. No petrol-no car => no breakfast-no energy. Get it? So pump up those vitamins and mineral enriched food you need for a good breakfast. You will definitely feel better and perform well during the day. Studies have shown people who eat breakfast have improved strength and endurance in the late morning with a more positive attitude towards their work. It doesn’t hurt to have a 10minute break in between too. You’ll find yourself recharged! So eat up your breakfast.
Love Yourself - Part 1
I started to recall over the past years’ encounter and like to share with you. You may even have heard about it or seen it but sometimes we may just tend to forget it over a period of time.
Some people (like me) reuse plastic water bottles for drinking and some carry few bottles in the car or at work at one time. Many are unaware of poisoning caused by reusing plastic bottles and some swear it is really handy to bring them around. Recently the Health Department has issued a warning to the public to stop reusing. Instead they recommended to recycle it. Why? The plastic component (called polyethylene terephthalate or PET) used in disposable mineral water contains a potentially carcinogenic element that is harmful to our body and worst, may even kill us in a matter of time. The bottles are only meant for one-time use only and if you must keep them longer, it should then be no longer than a few days or away from heat. Repeated washing and rinsing can cause the plastic to breakdown and cancer causing chemical agents can leach into the water. However, studies show that the main threat to your health is not from rinsing the bottles and the bottles with wide openings that allow you to clean is specifically designed for extended reuse. Use or not to use? I am sure you will think about it. Use your own judgment wisely!
I care. Do you?
I am not too sure how many people care and love (this include the contractor or manufacturer) the quality of the products they produce. I couldn’t help it but regretted saying that I am losing confidence in any brand name whether it is clothing, electronic pieces and parts or even the quality of food.
My experiences are gruelling but true; a 1.7lit kettle age 10+ years and is still functioning well but we have changed 2 branded bigger kettles (that holds 3.7lit) twice. One was over 1 and half year and the other 9months (now gone for warranty for some parts problem).
My mom has shifted and basically retired from cooking too….
I was honored to get a pass down gas stove cooker with 2 burner from her (ahem.. I used to cook with this cooker since I was 9 or 10 years of age) and it worked pretty well into my last 8 years of cooking while staying away from mommy dearest. But till late last year I had to let it go because one burner had died on me earlier and the second came to its life span. I had my mom on the phone to tell her the bad news as well as to ask her opinion about the cooker incase if I should get it fixed. “Well, alls well ends well!” thats what she said. So thats it. What’s gone is gone! Initially putting away the cooker was a great deal for me having cook with it for years but I really have to get a replacement else my three hungry dinosaurs will be cranky without mommy’s home cooked food!
. Hubby quickly went to town to get a new cooker but after several months of cooking the cooker end its life and I nearly caught in flame!!! So we had to replace again with a second cooker and this time I can see that the flame from the burner is not burning properly as it supposed to be. Often times, the flame is small and red and then it turn to blue again. Oh yes, I have a full load of gas in the tank so I don’t think the tank is the problem. So what now? I guess we’ll have to wait and see…
Now, my point is… get a grip! How can a product have a short life span and expect the consumers to replace one after one in just a nick of time? Is this what we pay for brand name? I just hope I get my kettle that has gone for warranty soon. It is the 9th day already.
A New Year and A …
It was this couple of months that I came to understand a new year for the Chinese starts after Winter Solstice festival and not the first day of Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration. During this time of the year the Chinese will start knocking the door of the hypermarkets and local stores in search for gourmet, delicacies, wines, seafood, cookies, clothing, (and the lists goes on)… whether it sounded weird or not it is really true that CNY is merely just a coincidence the first day of the chinese lunar calender. How true? Just ask your old folks or great gramps about it, ok.
Start the new year
My horoscope for the Rat year reads out loud (or exactly like me!)…….
“Timid and attractive, the Rabbits of the Chinese Zodiac tend to act more like bunnies, whether they like it or not! This Sign is extremely popular and has a wide circle of family and friends. Its compassionate nature leads it to be very protective of those it holds dear, but where romance is concerned, the Rabbit’s sentimentality can lead it to idealize relationships. The sweet, sensitive Rabbit often ends up giving more of itself to a partner than is realistic or healthy. The good news is, when this Sign goes off-balance, the Rabbit’s core group of friends and its stable home life help bring it back to center. The Rabbit is a rather delicate Sign that needs a solid base in order to thrive. Lacking close, supportive friends and family, the Rabbit might just break down in tears at the first sign of conflict. Emotional upsets in this Sign’s life can even lead to physical illnesses. Rabbits dislike arguments and other conflict and will try anything to avoid a fight; this results in something of a pushover nature. Rabbits can also lapse into pessimism and may seem stuck in life — often to mask their insecure natures. Rabbits tend to move through life’s lessons at their own, rather contemplative pace; it’s a waste of time to become exasperated with this Sign’s seeming disinterest in facing its problems and conquering them.
With the right partner — meaning someone whose high principles won’t allow it to take advantage of this sensitive, giving Sign — the Rabbit can make an incredibly loving and protective partner or family member. Rabbits love to entertain at home and always make sure their house is comfortable and tastefully-furnished. What Rabbits need most is a stronger sense of self-worth and the security that comes with it. Their discerning natures, coupled with some hard-won assertiveness, will help these happy creatures go far.”

Festive Chaos
I usually hunt for hampers or gift packs for any festive / celebration; of which Hari Raya (for Malays), Deepavali (for Indians), Christian (anyone celebrating Christmas) and lastly Chinese New Year (for Chinese) but I always ended up buying and then repacking either way.. o yes.. my family celebrate all occasions entirely because we have friends from all races!
but this year it’s the other way round! We gave a simple hamper for a Malay friend, bake a cake for an Indian friend, hand picked house warming + Christmas gift for another.. and I just recently gave away a Basket Hamper CNY Rattan Basket Hamper to my eldest sister. Although its relatively fun to make a pack or two for friends but believe me when you hit your head against a wall (”just like me”) and make this for sale you ought to remember this… nothing comes easy! ![]()
Valentine History
Valentine’s Day History
There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine’s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”. Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.
Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.
In the United States, Miss Esther Howland is given credit for sending the first valentine cards. Commercial valentines were introduced in the 1800’s and now the date is very commercialised. The town of Loveland, Colorado, does a large post office business around February 14. The spirit of good continues as valentines are sent out with sentimental verses and children exchange valentine cards at school.
St. Valentine Day History
The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl’s name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry.
Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. The good Saint Valentine was a priest at Rome in the days of Claudius II. He and Saint Marius aided the Christian martyrs and secretly married couples, and for this kind deed Saint Valentine was apprehended and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. He suffered martyrdom on the 14th day of February, about the year 270. At that time it was the custom in Rome, a very ancient custom, indeed, to celebrate in the month of February the Lupercalia, feasts in honour of a heathen god. On these occasions, amidst a variety of pagan ceremonies, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed.
The pastors of the early Christian Church in Rome endeavoured to do away with the pagan element in these feasts by substituting the names of saints for those of maidens. And as the Lupercalia began about the middle of February, the pastors appear to have chosen Saint Valentine’s Day for the celebration of this new feaSt. So it seems that the custom of young men choosing maidens for valentines, or saints as patrons for the coming year, arose in this way.
